The U.S. Women’s Open starts Thursday at Pine Needles in North Carolina with a record purse and some familiar names. Also in the field is the reigning New York high school girls’ golf champion. Melanie Green of Medina, who just completed her sophomore season at the University of South Florida, qualified for her first U.S. Women’s Open as an amateur by shooting 6-under-par 138 (68-70) at the Forest Country Club’s Bear Course in South Fort Myers.
